Letting Go

Monday, indeed. I was pretty sure where I was going to be heading with my post this morning, and then I woke up to high wind warnings and news. Big news. I mean big news perspectively, I suppose.  First, the Pope is resigning.  Now for many, that may not seem like big news, but consider this - this will be the first time a pope has resigned in more than 600 years.  Yeah, six HUNDRED years.  The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415.  That's pretty big.  Popes don't resign.  They die.  They hold on fast and do not let go no matter what until that final breath.

So, then I reconsidered a bit what I planned on writing about - this week will start the season of Lent in the Christian church (in one of my former lives my career followed the church calendar religiously - yes, I know I just typed that).  Across the world, Ash Wednesday will draw penitent worshipers, remembering anew our mortality, sinfulness, and grace in the risen Christ.  Mardi Gras celebrations will precede this, one last hoo-rah before the quiet season of reflection - or perhaps a Shrove Tuesday as in our home, meaning hubby's incredible pancakes for supper.  The pre-Easter season for many may mean a time traditionally for "giving up" or sacrificing (or in more recent times, for adding a spiritual practice).

As I said, in "another life," my career was tied to the church, but now I find myself, though faith-centered, not church-oriented, not unlike many in our society today.  Yet, this season still calls to me, much like Advent, to prepare myself, to look inward, to search, to "give up."  Last night, a Facebook friend shared this article which is what I planned to share today - "15 Things You Should Give Up to Be Happy."  Nothing like a good checklist to get through life.

Reading through the list, I realize the common thread weaving through all fifteen "to-do's" is the "simple to say, harder to-do" letting go.  That giving up, resigning - not out of quitting - but out of peaceful rest and acceptance.  And so, perhaps, what I planned to share today and the news that greeted me are not that far apart.  I believe that this season ahead is calling me to let go - not to quit, but to let go of many things I hold too tightly, to give peaceful release and open myself to what acceptance might bring.

What about you?

Bead Soup Blog Party

I am so excited to be participating (along with 500+ other bead artisans and aficionados across the world) in the 7th Bead Soup Blog Party.  I am a "newbie" at this, but basically, how it works is, you are paired with another beader - each of you prepares a "bead soup" (the 2 requirements are a focal and a toggle - the rest of the soup is up to you); the two of you swap "soups;" and you design a piece of jewelry using what you receive (you must use the focal and the toggle - you may use other parts of the "soup" if you like and you are free to add other beads).

My partner in this exchange is Mandi E. of Craft-o-licious.  Mandi has beautiful work on her site, and I hope to feature her and her designs here soon as part of my upcoming "Friday Feature."  I've also learned that while I'm enjoying our cold snowy winter, Mandi is loving the Southern California sunshine. Ahh...

Above is the bead soup I am sending out to Mandi today.  It was such a wonderful treasure hunt going through my beads - like every beader, I suppose, I forget what I have and it's fun to rediscover special treats.  I was really pleased to find the frosted emerald green lampwork that I had from DerondaDesigns - a beautiful, rich color and perfect for the spring colors we're seeing this year.

And in case you want the details on these beads, here's a complete list of the soup's ingredients :)
Now, I can't wait to see what Mandi has for me! Stay tuned!!

A Recipe from Gigi

Last week I was visiting with soccer girl (aka goalie daughter) who had come down with the flu - I was planning to meet Mom (aka Gigi) for a dinner out, but between S.G.'s doctor's visit, stopping by for some comfort food she could enjoy when I took her home, and filling her script for Tamiflu (and loading her up with a supply of kleenex, water, anti-viral goodies, and Cheez-its...yep, Cheez-its) - I found myself calling Mom around 7:15 pm to say, "Just leaving now," not exactly the best timing for a dinner out on a cold winter night when I still had a 30 minute drive to her house.

I pulled into the driveway half an hour later, expecting to leave in a few minutes and head to one of the area restaurants open at that hour (and not looking forward to going out again).  But, when I walked into the house, the most amazing aroma told me I wasn't going anywhere! Mom had "whipped up" this incredible quiche in just the time I had called, and it was finishing off in the oven, giving us time to relax over glasses of chardonnay.  With the quiche, she served a wonderful green salad with feta cheese, clementines, dried cranberries, and sugared pecans.  Who needs to eat out when you've got a Mom who'll just "throw this together"?  Thanks, Gigi ;) (Note:  recipe calls for cream and whole milk - Mom used half & half and 2% milk. Tasted great)

SALMON QUICHE

One 9-inch baked pie crust
Filling:
2 tablespoons butter                                    3 eggs
1 shallot, finely chopped                             1/2 cup whole milk
4 ounces mushrooms, thinly sliced          1/4 cup cream
4 ounces smoked salmon, chopped          1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or            1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried dillweed                        1/2 cup grated swiss cheese

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt the butter in a heavy medium skillet over medium heat.  Add the shallot and mushrooms.  Saute until mushrooms give off their liquid and it evaporates, about 5 to 8 minutes.  Remove from heat and cool.

Whisk the eggs, cream, salt and pepper in a medium bowl.  Stir in salmon, cheese and mushroom mixture.  Pour into crust.  Bake until top is set, about 20 to 25 minutes.  Cool slightly.  Serve warm or at room temperature.  Makes 4 - 6 servings.

Tuesday's Tanzania

While Andrew and I were in Ksiwani, we got to meet the village futbol team, a group Andrew had coached when he lived there.  As a soccer mom, I also quickly noticed the challenges this team faces on a daily basis.

First, the condition of their one and only soccer ball - because it has a hole in the interior, the boys are forced to rip open the outer skin each day to inflate the ball and then re-sew it.  This happens each and every day before practice.

Futbol is very popular in Tanzania (as it is throughout Africa), and in our travels we saw many futbol fields with regulation goals, made of metal.  So, I quickly noticed the goals of the Ksiwani field - large tree branches lashed together and easily knocked over with simply a strongly kicked ball or by scrambling players playing off a corner kick.

I'm happy to report that plans are underway to help the Ksiwani team.  My goalie daughter and her college women's soccer team are putting together a fundraiser to raise monies to build regulation goals and provide the team with practice balls and jerseys.  As soon as the details are finalized, I'll share them here so you can help out if you'd like.

Early Spring

The signs are here - spring has arrived! It's not just around the corner - Puxatawney Phil and Buckeye Chuck did NOT see their shadows, meaning spring will be here any day now.  Spring is here!

Yes, I know, if I look outside I see snow on the ground, and if I check the weather forecast, I will see more snow is coming in the next few days, but I assure you spring is here.  Just take a walk around your closest mall - or a virtual walk through your favorite shopping site. See?  Spring has arrived.

Now normally, I am the first to complain when retailers "push" the seasons - you know, "Back to School" is rolled out in your local Wally World in June, Halloween shows up in August, Christmas music starts playing late in October (because if you haven't picked up your Halloween goodies by then, forget it)...But, spring? Oh, bring it! I am so ready for these sun-bright colors and warm-weather looks. Forget snowy forecasts. I'm siding with the groundhogs this year! Spring? Yep, it's here!Spring Shine

These "Pearl Drops Earrings" are a new way to show your red ~ just listed in the Artfire shop.  Classic and stylish - freshwater pearls with sterling silver - perfect for "going red" on any occasion.
